Based on the novel by George Feifer, The Girl from Petrovka awakens romance at the height of the Cold War, starring Hal Holbrook (All the President's Men), along with Academy Award winners Goldie Hawn (Private Benjamin) and Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs).
In 1970s Moscow, Oktyabrina is a vivacious young ballet dancer who has little patience for the restrictions of Soviet life. When she falls for Joe, an American correspondent, their romance blossoms against the grey backdrop of Moscow - until the KGB begins to take an interest.
Produced by Richard Zanuck and David Brown, fresh from their triumph with The Sting! Due to pressure from Moscow, filming moved from Belgrade to Vienna, taking the politics off the screen to the reality of the Iron Curtain. The film features performances from Grégoire Aslan (Cleopatra) and renowned ballet dancer Anton Dolin, as well as a score composed by Academy Award winner Henry Mancini.
Before filming began, Anthony Hopkins searched London bookshops for a copy of Feifer's novel, and eventually found one filled with handwritten annotations in the margins. Years later, he met Feifer himself, who revealed he had once lent his own annotated copy to a friend who promptly lost it. It was the very copy Hopkins had found.
1500 copies only.
