Soderbergh followed his acclaimed directorial debut, Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), with the surrealist mystery thriller biopic Kafka (1991). This subversive take on the life of author Franz Kafka blends reality and Kafka’s own fictional works together into a unique, bizarre world.

After a colleague is murdered, insurance worker Kafka becomes embroiled in an underground group attempting to thwart a secret organisation that controls the major events in society.

Starring Jeremy Irons as Kafka, and featuring performances from Theresa Russell, Joel Grey, Ian Holm, and Alec Guinness, the once box-office flop has since mutated into a cult classic.

In 2021, Soderbergh premiered his long-planned re-cut and re-imagined version of the film, titled Mr. Kneff, transforming the picture into a silent, sepia-tinted, shortened vision, accompanied by an energetic contemporary score. Appearing here on disc for the first time worldwide, Mr. Kneff is proof of Soderbergh’s enthusiasm for embracing the unexpected and revisiting doors previously closed.

In the 1930s Depression-era Midwest, a young boy is forced to navigate life alone after his mother is committed to a sanatorium with tuberculosis. Surviving on his own in a St. Louis hotel, he waits for his travelling salesman father, whose return is uncertain.

A remake of Criss Cross (1949), and based on the novel by Don Tracy, Soderbergh’s crime noir The Underneath stars Peter Gallagher (The Player), Alison Elliott (Birth), and William Fichtner (Crash).

A recovering gambling addict attempts to reconcile with his family and friends but finds trouble and temptation when caught between feelings for his ex-wife and her dangerous hoodlum boyfriend.

Also featuring performances from Shelley Duvall and Elisabeth Shue, The Underneath features a screenplay written by Soderbergh himself, under the pseudonym Sam Lowry.
