Julie Andrews resembles real-life spy Mata Hari in this romantic musical comedy set during World War I, directed by Blake Edwards (Breakfast at Tiffany's), and nominated for three Academy Awards.
Lili Smith is a beloved music hall singer, uplifting French and British soldiers by rallying patriotic songs. As an undercover German spy, she seduces military officers until she unpredictably falls in love with an American war hero, Major Larrabee.
Also starring Rock Hudson (Giant, All That Heaven Allows), the joyful score was written by legendary Academy Award-winning duo Johnny Mercer and Henry Mancini, with the script co-written by director Blake Edwards and screenwriter William Peter Blatty - who three years later would go on to write The Exorcist.
One of Hollywood's most notorious troubled productions, Darling Lili ballooned from a $6 million budget to over $16 million (with two years of aerial photography contributing to these costs), and was finally re-edited by Paramount without Edwards’ involvement. In 1991, Edwards was invited to re-edit the film into a Director’s Cut - included here in standard-definition as a Special Feature.
