Great British Railway Journeys follows presenter Michael Portillo as he travels around the UK by train using an 1840s edition of Bradshaw’s Railway Guide to explore the country’s history, culture, industry and landscapes through its railways. In Series 16 (2025), Portillo journeys across a variety of regions — from the ancient woodlands and pastures of the Weald in southeast England to the scenic Lake District, the rolling countryside of Cumbria and Dumfriesshire, and the historic county of Essex. Along the way he visits local landmarks, meets residents, delves into historical stories, and reflects on how Victorian‑era railways helped shape modern Britain’s towns, industries and society.
